"I print as large as I do because I want the small details to become significant" - Edward Burtynski

I was really happy when Erika mentioned Edward Burtynsky in class on Tuesday as he is one of Canada's most gifted photographers in my opinion. His work is something that has to be experienced and cannot be explained. When I first saw his work in person at the AGA I thought the photographs were incredibly beautiful and honestly didn't really think about what they were showing me or trying to convey. In terms of ignorance and finding beauty in something which is actually devastating, I can compare this to my own inhabitance in Alberta. I rarely think about oil or its effect on nature. I go about my day in a very normal fashion and often ignore the signs explaining the environmental problems surrounding me. I think it is easier to see a picture as beautiful rather than really looking at it, and easier to dismiss the small details as insignificant.
