An Awesome New Discovery

So, my first new discovery in E-town happened Friday. I had  an assignment from my Art History class to do an exhibit review on a non-commercial gallery exhibit. After walking around downtown for a while I realized it was kind of challenging since most of the galleries are in fact commercial. Fortunately a lovely lady at one of these galleries directed me to the Harcourt Gallery on 112th street. Considering my major is art history I was slightly disappointed in myself that I hadn't been to this gallery before. Turns out the Harcourt House is an arts centre that exhibits local, aswell as international contemporary art. The exhibits are amazing and the staff is more than helpful. Cynthia Fuhrer, a local artist, is exhibiting her sculpture busts right now. There are also three other exhibits by other artists. The atmosphere in the Fuhrer room is serene and beautiful. I don't want to descibe it too much because I think people need to see it to understand, but I would definitely recommend visiting if you are downtown.

I was truly excited to discover this gallery and the unique work it displays. I am a frequent visitor to the AGA which is awesome (especially at the moment with the "Symbolist Muse" exhibit) but it was really nice to see some local work, especially since I think alot of people underestimate the artistic talent we have in our own city.

  1. I think it's great how your Art History class is getting you to go outside of your textbook and engage you with the local art scene. I think too often as students we like to confine art--in all of its forms--to the status of historical object, when in reality it is out there waiting to be discovered.

  2. Like Jamin posted above, I also think its great that your Art History class is encouraging you to go out and discover more about Edmonton's local art scene. I, myself, have always wanted to find out more of the artwork that Edmonton artists have to offer and where it stands on an international level. I think that local art is sometimes, if not most of the time, overshadowed by "internationally recognized" artists so it's exciting to learn about a place that brings both local and international contemporary art to the same level.
